Calm down your angry skin

Skin sensitivity is more common than ever before, and the chances are, you have experienced at least one episode of red, angry, stressed-out skin. It doesn’t matter if you have oily skin, dry skin, or even if you deem yourself to have the holy grail of skin: ‘normal’ skin, you can still end up with some level of skin sensitivity.

Toners in the early days

Going back 30 years ago or so, toners were used to remove residue from the skin after cleansing. Most of this residue was mineral oil, a pore-clogging filler ingredient that is rarely used in cleansers today. To fully rid the skin of mineral oil, toners contained harsh, skin-stripping (SD) alcohol to do the job. Yet, many people find (SD) alcohol irritating and drying to their skin, hence why toners got a bad rap and why they often get left out of our daily skincare routines.

Hydration Heaven

Most of today’s toners are all about drenching the skin with hydration, and as most cleansers are free from mineral oil, there’s no need for a ‘striping’ toner. Dermalogica was one of the first skincare brands in the early 80s to step away from astringent toner and develop a hydrating toner. (don’t we deserve a high-5 or a thumbs up? haha)

Hydration has limitless benefits for the skin. Firstly, hydrated skin is healthy skin. Your skin feels smoother and looks fresher and plumper. Not only does it look and feel better, but keeping the skin hydrated helps prevent congestion, sensitivity and fine lines from forming.

Our skin is angrier than ever before

With the rise in pollution, lifestyle stress and other environmental factors come to a greater increase in skin sensitivity. That is why Dermalogica has embraced this ever-changing and evolving modern lifestyle condition with a renewed focus in its UltraCalming segment. According to research done at The International Dermal Institute, there are three primary signs of sensitisation: redness, dehydration, and a compromised skin barrier. Enriched with potent actives that target sensitivity, the new UltraCalming formulas work synergistically with the existing UltraCalming line to relieve these symptoms and protect against future sensitivity flare-ups.

Introducing the Calm Water Gel

A hydration powerhouse, this unique water-gel moisturiser provides critical hydration to dry and sensitive skin. Upon application, the Calm Water Gel transforms into a skin-quenching fluid, forming a weightless, refreshing barrier against the sensitivity-causing triggers in our environment.

To use, simply squeeze a small amount into your palm and rub your hands together to activate the water-binding properties. Pat gently onto the face, neck and chest and enjoy instant relief. Use twice a day to keep your skin hydrated and protected. Don’t forget to finish with SPF during the daytime.

Key ingredients in Calm Water Gel include:

  • Dual Hyaluronic Acid – hydrates at different skin surface layers to boost and lock in moisture.
  • Apple Fruit and Glycerine - hydrates and softens, whilst defending against dryness.
  • Cactus Pear – soothes and calms the skin by impacting nerve-related inflammation.
